Portsmouth: All Along the Waterfront

Molotow hybrid acrylic pens
Actually, we didn't cover anything like the whole waterfront (just the bit between Gunwharf Quays and Southsea), but the conflation of those two song titles (Bob Dylan via Jimi Hendrix, "All Along the Watchtower"  and Simple Minds, "Waterfront") has got stuck in my mind.

The image above was done while walking back from Southsea, aproaching the square Tower. As I was moving at the time, the perspectives were changing and so this represents the walk along that short stretch rather than any specific view.

The image below was done on the way out to Southsea.

Oil pastel (Sennelier Nature set) with HB pencil
I was attracted by the steps down to the water from the quay over on Spice Island. Oil pastel seemed like a good idea - the ability to lay down large areas of dark colour which could then be scraped back (this makes my thumbnail very messy) -  but the restricted level of detail inherent in the media was a little frustrating with regard to this subject. In fact, this is why I used an HB pencil to clarify some of the straight lines of railings and suchlike.

I also made several smaller drawings in pen:
